How do they judge the difficulty in the Olympic gymnastic events? Join or Log In to answer.
Well, as far as actual scoring goes, there are two parts to every score whenever someone performs. First there is the difficulty score.
-modcom (41Q / 8580A) Wed Aug 13, 2008 10:38pm

This means that they take all the elements that a person is doing in their "routine" and each element has a point value. If they perform all of these elements, then they will get the maximum score for their difficulty score.
-modcom (41Q / 8580A) Wed Aug 13, 2008 10:39pm

They judge based on universally accepted "perfect" forms...
-Mangangali (18Q / 6882A) Wed Aug 13, 2008 10:39pm

The second part of the score is the execution part. This has a start value of 10 and then any time they make a mistake (mistakes have pre-determined minus values), then those points are subtracted from their 10-point starting point
-modcom (41Q / 8580A) Wed Aug 13, 2008 10:39pm

The difficulty score is usually in a range from 5 to 7 points, so a great total score would be a 17 (7 + 10), for example
-modcom (41Q / 8580A) Wed Aug 13, 2008 10:40pm

So if you have a really difficult routine, you have a higher starting value than someone with easier "stunts". However, since they are more difficult, you're more likely to make mistakes or fall, so it's kind of evened-out.
